Caroline Stines has placed three powerful “what if” questions into the public conversation:
What if more threats were made?
What if Mickey had been warning people all along?

Now, the attorneys for former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines have filed a notice of expedited appeal after Special Judge Christopher Cohron denied him bond.
Tonight, Elizabeth Jones and Sweet Tater examine Caroline’s video, the new bond appeal, the August 11 court order, and the questions the Kentucky Court of Appeals may now be asked to consider.
Then we follow the documented trail through the Letcher County Jail, home incarceration, ankle-monitoring fees, after-hours meetings in Judge Kevin Mullins’s chambers, and the official power to send a vulnerable woman back to jail.
What would organized abuse of power look like inside a small Appalachian justice system?
It might not look like black cars and matching suits. It could look like a badge, a courthouse key, a monitoring device, a criminal complaint, and several officials controlling different doors in the same hallway.
The jail did not have to be the room where the alleged abuse occurred. The jail could have been the threat that made compliance possible.
And for a woman who believed surrendering her body was her only way to stay out, leaving jail did not necessarily mean becoming free.
The bars could follow her home as guilt, fear, and shame that never belonged to her.
