To pump blood all the way up that incredibly long neck, a giraffe needs an extremely powerful heart. It weighs around 11 kilograms, measures roughly 60 centimetres long, and sits inside the chest between the lungs not somewhere inside the neck.
But here is something even more incredible.
A mother giraffe gives birth while standing, meaning the newborn calf drops roughly one and a half metres onto the ground.
It looks dramatic, but the fall helps break the umbilical cord and stimulates the calf to take its first breath.
The impact doesn’t start its heart—the heart is already beating—but it helps kick-start the calf’s independent life.
What an incredible animal!
