We are heading into the woods this morning for a hunt. But not for deer or morel mushrooms. We are talking about the hunt for Michigan’s biggest trees.
The Michigan Big Tree Hunt is officially on, and anyone can enter. It is free, and it is open right now through August of 2028.
Here is how it works: you head outside, find a tree that looks impressively large, measure the circumference about four and a half feet off the ground, snap some photos, and submit it to bigtreehunt dot com. That’s it. And here is what makes this so cool: You don't need to hike deep into the wilderness to find these trees.
Michigan’s biggest trees are not hiding in some remote forest. They are in backyards, neighborhood parks, cemeteries, schoolyards, and front yards. The next one could be right outside your window.
Prizes are awarded for the biggest tree overall, the biggest in each county, and separate categories for hunters 15 and younger and 16 and older.
Lindsey Lights, the Big Tree Hunt chair with ReLeaf Michigan, the organization behind the whole thing, joined Local 4 Live to talk about how Michiganders can start looking.
