"Personal Jesus" is a song by the English electronic music band Depeche Mode.
It was released as the lead single from their seventh studio album, Violator (1990), in 1989.
It reached No. 13 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 28 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
The single was their first to enter the US top 40 since 1984's "People Are People" and was their first gold-certified single in the US.
In Germany, "Personal Jesus" is one of the band's longest-charting songs, staying on the West German Singles Chart for 23 weeks.
In 2004, "Personal Jesus" was ranked No. 368 in Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and in September 2006 it was voted as one of the "100 Greatest Songs Ever" in Q magazine.
"Personal Jesus" was rereleased as a single on 30 May 2011 for the Depeche Mode remix album Remixes 2: 81β11, with the leading remix by the production team Stargate.
The song has been covered by numerous artists, including Johnny Cash, Marilyn Manson, Def Leppard, Iggy Pop and Mindless Self Indulgence.
Background and composition
In mid-1989, the band began recording in Milan with record producer Flood. The result of this session was the single "Personal Jesus", which featured a catchy bluesy riff and drum-based sound, radically different from anything the band had released thus far. Although not the first Depeche Mode song to feature guitar parts ("Behind the Wheel" and their cover of "Route 66" featured a guitar; "Love, in Itself" and "And Then..." from Construction Time Again and "Here is the House" from Black Celebration featured an acoustic guitar), it was the first time a guitar was used as a dominant instrument in a Depeche Mode song. The song was inspired by the book Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley.
According to songwriter Martin Gore:
It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis Presley was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody's heart is like a god in some way. We play these god-like parts for people but no one is perfect, and that's not a very balanced view of someone, is it?
"Personal Jesus" is written in the key of Fβ― minor with a tempo of 130 beats per minute in 12
8 time.
Impact and legacy
In 2011, Slant Magazine listed the song at number 81 in their ranking of "The 100 Best Singles of the 1990s".
In 2017, Billboard ranked "Personal Jesus" second behind only "Enjoy the Silence" on a list of their "20 Best Depeche Mode Songs".
Robert Smith listed "Personal Jesus" as one of his 30 favourite songs from the 1980s.
John Lydon commented on the track: "it's a serious problem for me, all this technology. The people who've used it best would be Depeche Mode. 'Your own Personal Jesus!' Bloody 'ell mate, they got it! They were using the Casiotone effect and they wrapped a song around it, but they didn't let it dictate to the song. That's another tune I just absolutely love β I was so impressed with the bravery of attempting such a subject matter."
Cover versions
In 2002, American country singer Johnny Cash covered "Personal Jesus" for his album American IV: The Man Comes Around.
The idea to cover the song was suggested by record producer Rick Rubin.
For the song, Rubin asked Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante to re-work an acoustic version of the song, which featured a simple acoustic riff that stripped down the song to a blues style. βThatβs probably the most evangelical song [Iβve] ever recorded,β said Cash, βI donβt know that the writer ever meant it to be that, but thatβs what it is.β
Marilyn Manson released their cover version of the track as the only previously unreleased recording included on their 2004 greatest hits album Lest We Forget: The Best Of.
In 2013, former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar covered the song on his twelfth studio album Sammy Hagar & Friends.
In 2018, British rock band Def Leppard released their own version of the song.

Needles in the Camels Eye is a song by Brian Eno, and its history is tied to his career-defining solo debut album, Here Come the Warm Jets.
The song was the opening track on Enos first solo album, Here Come the Warm Jets, which was released on February 8, 1974.
Following his departure from the glam-rock band Roxy Music, Eno began his solo career as an avant-garde artist, composer, and producer.
The album was recorded in just twelve days in September 1973.
The song is notable for its unique sound, which is a mix of glam rock and proto-punk. It features a relentless drum beat and a distorted, snake-like guitar riff. The song was co-written by Eno and guitarist Phil Manzanera, who was also a member of Roxy Music. A famous detail about the recording is that Eno would hit Manzaneras whammy bar in rhythm to create a rippling guitar sound.
Eno has stated that the lyrics to Needles in the Camels Eye and other songs on the album were created using a free-associative method. He would sing nonsense syllables over the backing tracks and then form those sounds into actual words and phrases. This is why the lyrics are often described as macabre and without a specific, intended meaning.
The song, and the album as a whole, was highly acclaimed and has been described as a landmark in art-rock. Its considered one of Enos best pop efforts, capturing a sick and sinister glam-rock sound that was ahead of its time.
The songs title is a reference to the famous biblical proverb about a camel passing through the eye of a needle. The proverb is used in religious texts to denote a task that is difficult or impossible. However, Eno has said that his lyrics for the song were written so quickly that it would be a wasted effort to look for meaning in them.

Those who know
They dont let it show
They just give you one long glance
And you go, oh oh, oh oh.
Goes to show
How winds blow
The weathers fine
And I feel so so-so, so.
Birds of prey
With too much to say
Oh what could be my destiny
Another rainy day.
Why ask why?
For by the by and by
All mysteries are just more
Needles in the camels eye.
Those who know
They dont let it show
They just give you one long lance
And you go, oh oh, oh oh.
Why ask why?
For by the by and by
All mysteries are just more
Needles in the camels eye.

As Tears Go By is a song written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham.
Marianne Faithfull recorded and released it as a single in the United Kingdom in 1964.
Her song peaked at number nine on both the UK and Irish singles charts.
Later, the Rolling Stones recorded their own version, which was included on the American album Decembers Children (And Everybodys).
London Records released it as a single, which reached number six in the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
History
As Tears Go By was one of the early compositions by Jagger and Richards; previously the Rolling Stones had chiefly been performing American blues and R&B tunes. By one account, Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham locked Jagger and Richards in a kitchen in order to force them to write a song together, even suggesting what type of song he wanted: I want a song with brick walls all around it, high windows and no sex. The result initially was named As Time Goes By, the title of the song Dooley Wilson sings in the film Casablanca. It was Oldham who replaced Time with Tears.
According to Jagger biographer Philip Norman, the song was mainly created by Jagger, in co-operation with session guitarist Big Jim Sullivan, although Jagger claims he was responsible for the lyrics while Richards wrote the melody. Oldham subsequently gave the ballad (a format that the Stones were not yet known for) to Faithfull, then 17, for her to record as a B-side. Oldham played a demo for her with Jagger singing and Big Jim Sullivan on acoustic guitar. He handed me a scrawled lyric sheet and I went back into the studio and did it. As soon as I heard the cor anglais playing the opening bars I knew it was going to work. After a couple of takes it was done. Andrew came and gave me a big hug. Congratulations darling. Youve got yourself a number six, he said.
The success of the recording caused Decca Records to switch the song to an A-side, where it became a popular single.
The melody features a distinctive english horn line.
It reached number nine in the UK Singles Chart and launched Faithfulls career as a major singer. The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending 28 November 1964, where it stayed for nine weeks peaking at number 22. In Canada, it peaked at number two on the RPM chart.
(I Cant Get No) Satisfaction is a song by the English rock band the Rolling Stones. A product of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards songwriting partnership, it features a guitar riff by Richards that opens and drives the song. The riff is widely considered one of the greatest hooks of all time. The songs lyrics refer to sexual frustration and commercialism.
The song was first released as a single in the United States in June 1965 and was also featured on the American version of the Rolling Stones fourth studio album, Out of Our Heads, released that July. Satisfaction was a hit, giving the Stones their first number one in the US. In the UK, the song initially was played only on pirate radio stations, because its lyrics were considered too sexually suggestive. It later became the Rolling Stones fourth number one in the United Kingdom.
It is one of the worlds most popular songs, and was No. 31 on Rolling Stone magazines The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list in 2021. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. The song was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2006, the first and so far only Rolling Stones recording to be included in the Registry.

Donnie Barren played lead guitar for the Los Angeles rock band City Lights in the late 70s and early 80s, writing and singing songs for the groups single (Action/Back Off Babe) and EP (Blackout). Some of the more fun gigs were at the Whiskey a Go-Go, Starwood, Gazzarris, and the Troubadour, where City Lights headlined or shared the stage with bands like Dokken, RATT, Poison, Snow, X, Oingo Boingo (Danny Elfmans band), Joshua, and Dubrow (formerly Quiet Riot).
Donnie ventured out on his own in 1982, releasing the single I Love My Cats Meow/Falling In Love in March 1983 (acting as musician, singer/songwriter, producer and promo-man). The tune was well received, being played on over 15 Southern California radio stations during its 1st month and garnering college radio coverage across the USA and in Germany.
Cats Meow hit no.1 on LAs KXLU, entered KROQs Rodney on the Roqs Top 10 in April (at no.7) and moved to no.1 for all of May and June. At the time, KROQ (FM 106.7 in Pasadena, CA) was the no.1 Album Oriented Rock (AOR) station in LA and was regarded as the new music trend-setter across the US. For perspective, Nenas 99 Balloons (CBS Records) held the no.1 position on Rodney on the Roqs Top 10 the following month, July of 1983. This was long before other AOR stations added the German song to their play lists, ultimately making 99 Balloons a national Top 40 Hit.
Unfortunately, just as Cats Meow was climbing the charts, Donnies distribution partner (Faulty Products, a division of IRS/A&M Records) ran out of money and stopped promoting its stable of artists (groups like the Bangles, Dead Kennedys & DOA). Looking back, its ironic that Donnie signed up with a label called Faulty Products, but they were considered one of the best new music distributors at the time. If they had put some promotion support behind the single, the song could have had a strong national showing.
Undeterred, Donnie continued to record and release original tracks throughout the 80s while gaining a deeper appreciation for the business side of music. He ultimately took a break to finish school (earning an MBA from Harvard) and then dove into the business world (albeit not the music biz), working at Procter and Gamble and Microsoft.
Years later, Donnie returned to his passion, re-releasing parts of his 80s catalog, producing a fresh collection of rock instrumentals (under his full name, Donnie Barren Holtzinger), and writing/producing songs for sync. His music now fuels TV shows, films, sports arenas, video games, and ad campaigns β with placements on HBO, Hulu, Netflix, The CW, the WNBA, Sonyβs MLB The Show, and brands like Amazon and Toyota.
Some people have asked: Donnie who? When Donnie was younger, he thought his last name was too long for a musician, so he opted to use his middle name. Now, many years the wiser, Donnie goes by either Donnie Barren or Don Holtzinger (or Donnie Barren Holtzinger). So, for those people that knew Donnie Barren (or dB for short), wed like to introduce you to Don Holtzinger.
Drop Donnie a line on Facebook (@donholtzinger) or Instagram (@donniebarren). I know hed like to hear from you.
π΅ [SONG INFO]
Greensleeves/What Child is This? has an odd origin.
While they have the same melody, lyrically Greensleeves is a love song and What Child is This? is a song about the birth of Christ.
Greensleeves is a traditional English folk song. A broadside ballad by the name A Newe Northen Dittye of ye Ladye Greene Sleves was registered by Richard Jones at the London Stationers Company in September 1580, and the tune is found in several late 16th-century and early 17th-century sources.
What Child Is This? is a Christmas carol with lyrics written by William Chatterton Dix in 1865 and set to the tune of Greensleeves in 1871. Although written in Great Britain, the carol today is more popular in the United States than its country of origin.

πΏ [SONG INFO]
Woo-Hoo is a classic rockabilly song by the American group The Rock-A-Teens, best known for its distinctive, largely instrumental sound with the repeated Woo-Hoo vocalizations.
Origin and Release
The song is credited to Roanoke, Virginia country music DJ Dick Moran and the music store DORAN records.
It was later acquired and released by George Donald McGraw and The Rock-A-Teens in September 1959.
It was initially released on McGraws Doran label before being picked up by Roulette Records for wider distribution.
The Rock-A-Teens
The band, formed in 1956 in Richmond, Virginia, was originally known as Boo Walke & the Rockets.
Their lineup for Woo-Hoo included Vic Mizelle (vocals, guitar), Bobby Boo Walke (guitar), Bill Cook (guitar), Eddie Robinson (sax), Paul Dixon (bass), and Bill Smith (drums).
Copyright and Authorship
While the Rock-A-Teens were initially listed as writers, the songs authorship became a point of contention.
George Donald McGraw, who owned Doran Records, acquired the copyright for a few hundred dollars after another musician, Arthur Guitar Boogie Smith, claimed similarities to his own work.
Eventually, the songwriting credit was given to George Donald McGraw.
Commercial Success
Woo-Hoo was the bands only major hit, reaching No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and charting in various regions across the U.S. and Canada.
Its success led Roulette Records to record an album with the band, but neither the album nor subsequent singles were as successful, and the group disbanded around 1960.
Cover versions
Woo Hoo was covered by the Scottish rock band, The Revillos, (under the name Yeah Yeah), under the same title by the French psychobilly (or as they say themselves, yΓ©-yΓ©-punk) band Les Wampas on their 1988 album, Chauds, sales et humides, by the Japanese girl band The 5.6.7.8s on their 1996 album Bomb the Twist and as a dance/electronica track in 2005 by the American act The Daltronics.
It was also covered by Showaddywaddy. The Replacements have also performed it in concert on several occasions.
The 5.6.7.8s version gained cult popularity when they performed it in Quentin Tarantinos 2003 film Kill Bill: Vol. 1; it also appears on its soundtrack. Additionally, it appears in the film Glory Road.
In 2004, after appearing in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and an advertisement for Carling beer, the cover peaked at No. 28 on the UK Singles Chart, a rare Western singles chart appearance for a Japanese band.
The song is also used, in part, in a Vonage advertising campaign in the United States. Gloo Gloo, a cover of the 5.6.7.8s version of the song, was created by Christophe HΓ©ral for the 2013 video game Rayman Legends.

On October 14, 1991, a cover of Dizzy recorded by English comedian Vic Reeves and alternative-rock band the Wonder Stuff was released in the United Kingdom.
It reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and remained there for two weeks.
It was a number three hit in Australia and also charted in Austria, Ireland and New Zealand.
This version added another key change to the 11 that already existed (from F major to G major).
The music video features Reeves and the band performing on stage with a row of washing machines and microwave ovens in the background instead of amplifiers. Reeves comedy partner Bob Mortimer appears in the background with the Wonder Stuffs Miles Hunt playing a tambourine and singing backing vocals.
Reeves and the band, together with Mortimer, performed the song on BBCs Top of the Pops on October 24, 1991.

Searchin is a song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller specifically for the Coasters.
Atco Records released it as a single in March 1957, which topped the R&B Chart for twelve weeks.
It also reached number three on the Billboard singles chart.
Although the Coasters had previously done well on the R&B charts, it was Searchin (along with Young Blood on the flip side) that sparked the groups rock and roll fame.
Composition
The lyrics, written by Leiber, use vernacular phrasing. The plot revolves around the singers determination to find his love wherever she may be, even if he must resort to detective work. The songs gimmick was to cite law-enforcement figures from popular culture such as Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chan, Joe Friday, Sam Spade, Boston Blackie, Bulldog Drummond, and the North-West Mounted Police (the Mounties). The vocals of the Coasters lead singer Billy Guy are raw and insistent. Driving the song is a pounding piano rhythm of two bass notes alternating on every second beat.
The theme of the song is searching for love: Well, Im searching, Yeah Im gonna find her. The refrain is simple variations of this phrase, Gonna find her, yeah ah, gonna find her.

The song was recorded in Los Angeles on February 15, 1957.
Mike Stoller: Piano
Gil Bernal: Saxophone
Barney Kessel: Guitar/Mandolin

Ralph Hamilton: Bass
Jesse Sailes: Drums

Other versions
Otis Blackwell released a version of this song on his 1977 album titled These are my songs!. Blackwell attributed the track to Lieber/Stoller, however the album brought to light many tracks that Blackwell was the original composer for. This was the only song on the album that was not a Blackwell composition
Johnny Rivers released a version of the song as a medley with So Fine which reached number 113 on the U.S. pop chart in 1973.
Singer/songwriter Paul McCartney chose Searchin as one of his Desert Island Discs in 1982. McCartney performed the song with the Beatles during their audition for Decca Records on January 1, 1962 (with somewhat mangled lyrics that included a mention of Peter Gunn).
The song was performed by Floyd Pepper in an episode of The Muppet Show. It was famously used in Brad Birds 1999 animated film, The Iron Giant.
The song was also recorded and performed by Sharon, Lois & Bram for both of their childrens television series Sharon, Lois & Brams Elephant Show (1987) and Skinnamarink TV (1997). The Accents - Searchin (The Coasters Cover)](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/sW_4GHTv4Z4/mqdefault.jpg)

Yesterday Man is a song written by Chris Andrews and was his first single as a solo singer, released on 17 September 1965.
It climbed to No. 3 in the UK Singles Chart, and No. 1 in Ireland, New Zealand, Germany and Austria. In England it sold 20,000 copies in its first day.
After a visit to England in September 1965, Jerry Wexler made a deal for Atco Records to release the single in the United States. In the US, it reached No. 94 in 1966.
The Cash Box trade paper reported in its 5 February 1966 issue that it had passed 300,000 sales in Germany alone, and later over 800,000 as a final tally in that country (28 May 1966). Additionally, Andrews was awarded a silver disc for 250,000 sales of the single in the UK.
In a contemporary review of the song, the Evening Sentinel wrote how: Why write hits for Adam and Sandie all the time? says Andrews and sounds quite good on his own, further deeming it to be Blue-beatish and good.
In 2014, Spin included the song in their list of 25 Major Moments in White Reggae History; in the accompanying write-up, writer Chris Martins deemed it the birth of White Reggae and highlighted how the song made [Andrews] heart pitter and patter to an island riddim.
Mario Villanueva of The Greenville News included the song in a list of twelve exemplary cod-reggae songs.
Reggae Mint of UDiscover Music wrote that the ska-styled solo hit was a musical predecessor to the Beatles song Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (1968).
Andrews brass-heavy hit was also a partial inspiration for the oom-pah arrangement written by Johnny Marr for the Smiths song Frankly Mr. Shankly (1986).
A German-language version was also recorded.
Named Alles tu Ich Fuer Dich, it was released on the label Deutsche Vogue.

Robert Wyatt version
In 1974, the song was covered by Robert Wyatt (with production by Nick Mason) as the follow-up to his hit with Neil Diamonds Im a Believer (released on Virgin Records).
However, it was never officially released, due to Virgin head Richard Branson deeming the version a bit too gloomy.
In 1992, Wyatt recalled: I did Yesterday Man, a major-key, upbeat, jolly pseudo-reggae thing. I bent all the chords out of shape and did the whole thing kind of sideways. And I was so happy with that. They said, Were not putting this out. Its too lugubrious. I thought, That must be good, but I got a dictionary, and its not.
According to Wyatt in an interview with Uncut, We never pretended to be reggae but it was obviously influenced by that feel, which was very much the heartbeat of London around that time.
Richard Cook of Mojo deemed the Wyatt version to be heartbreakingly desolate and a complete antithesis to Chris Andrews original.
Charles Shaar Murray of NME wrote: Where Andrews original was aggressively petulant, Wyatts is wistfully surreal, noting that the musician performs the song on assorted bits of percussion (including a bass-drum whomped by hand) and what sounds like a harmonium, but plays around the beat while the main rhythmic push comes from Windo and Feza.

Why Little Girl is a song by the English rock and roll group Shane Fenton & The Fentones.
It was released in 1962 as the B-side to their single Its All Over Now.
The song was written by Bernard Jewry (who performed as Shane Fenton) and Fraser. Bernard Jewry later achieved greater fame as the glam rock artist Alvin Stardust.
While Its All Over Now peaked at No. 29 on the UK Singles Chart, Why Little Girl did not chart independently.
Shane Fenton & The Fentones were formed in Mansfield in 1960.
Interestingly, Shane Fenton was a stage name used by two different musicians. The original Shane Fenton, Johnny Theakston, passed away, and Bernard Jewry took on the identity. The group had four Top 40 hits in the UK with Jewry as their lead singer before the rise of the Merseybeat sound.

π΅ [SONG INFO]
(I Just) Died in Your Arms is a song by the English pop rock band Cutting Crew, released as their debut single in July 1986 from their first studio album, Broadcast.
The song was written by frontman Nick Van Eede, produced by Terry Brown, John Jansen and the band, and mixed at Utopia Studios in London by Tim Palmer.
The power ballad is the bands biggest hit, peaking at No. 1 in Canada, Finland, Norway, and the United States. It additionally reached the top five in Ireland, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and West Germany.
Composition and recording
According to Nick Van Eede, he wrote down a lot of song titles and ideas on a sheet of wallpaper, and one of the lines written there was I just died in your arms tonight. The line came to Van Eede while he was having sex with his girlfriend; Van Eede said: I actually remember saying that, and wrote it down. He woke up in the morning, wrote the song, and recorded a demo in three days. He first added some chords to the line, singing it phonetically, before adding other lines from the wallpaper to construct a song. He wrote for three or four hours before realising what he was singing about. He said: Id split up with my girlfriend, wed got back together for one night and theres a lot of guilt because I should have kept my distance.
He first recorded a demo in the house of his schoolfriend Pete Birch, with Birch singing harmony in the song. The band recorded the song after they were signed to Siren, part of Virgin Records, in the Mediasound Studios in New York. Van Eede was dissatisfied with the result, and tried to re-record the song in London. They could not get the harmony right in the pre-production, so producer John Jansen asked about the person who sang the harmony in the demo, and Birch was brought in, and he sang a perfect take in four minutes. Jansen, however, had to leave before the recording was finished, and Van Eede contacted Terry Brown, the producer in Canada for Van Eedes previous band, the Drivers. Brown flew to London, and recut the whole song, with the exceptions of some keyboards and vocals.
The song was released in 1986. The label questioned the use of brackets for I Just in the title, but relented when it was pointed out such similar use in (I Cant Get No) Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones.
In 2024, Jax Jones, Joel Corry and Jason Derulo collaborated to create a remix version of the song called Tonight (D.I.Y.A.).
Music video
There were two music videos produced. The North American version featured artistic fragmented shots using a model, with the band performing to camera. The UK version was filmed in a studio, both in color as well as black and white, while only the latter had been made available in Apple Music stores, from countries like Canada and Brazil.

Come Together is a song by The Beatles written by John Lennon and credited to Lennon McCartney.
The song is the opening track on the album Abbey Road. It reached the top of the charts in the US, and peaked at number four in the UK.
Origin and meaning
The songs history began when Lennon was inspired by Timothy Learys campaign for governor of California titled Come together, join the party against Ronald Reagan, which promptly ended when Leary was sent to prison for possession of marijuana.
It has been speculated that each verse refers cryptically to each of The Beatles (e.g. hes one holy roller allegedly refers to the spiritually inclined George Harrison; he got monkey finger, he shoot Coca-Cola to Ringo, the funny Beatle; he got Ono sideboard, he one spinal cracker to Lennon himself; and got to be good-looking cause hes so hard to see to Paul); however, it has also been suggested that the song has only a single pariah-like protagonist and Lennon was painting another sardonic self-portrait.
