Under the reign of Peter the Great and Catherine the Great, St Petersburg was to become a cultural and artistic capital that could easily compete with European cities.

In 1764, Catherine the Great founded the Imperial Academy of Arts. The school building was designed by Alexander Kokorinov and Jean Vallin de la Mothe in the neoclassical style. It overlooks the Neva River, opposite the Winter Palace, and was completed in 1788. To this day, students from all over the world come here to study the fine arts.
