Dr. Gas became the premier supplier of oval exhaust tubing, X-pipe crossovers, and NASCAR boom tubes for legendary Cup Series teams like Hendrick Motorsports, Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI), and Roush Racing.
Boyd Butler—founder of Dr. Gas Exhaust—worked for Hercules Aerospace doing Cold War missile engineering and fluid dynamics. As a lifelong gearhead tinkering with his 1967 Shelby GT350 Mustang, Boyd wanted to achieve that smooth, high-rpm melodic V8 exhaust sound of 180-degree headers without the impossible fabrication nightmare. In 1987, Boyd fabricated the world's very first X-pipe prototype to test exhaust scavenging, crossover pulse tuning, and backpressure reduction—and automotive history was made.
This breakthrough custom exhaust technology remained a closely guarded but unknown secret until after the 1995 Daytona 500, where Sterling Marlin took the checkered flag in his Morgan-McClure Kodak car running the first ovalized Dr. Gas X-pipe. That single Daytona 500 race turned pit road and motorsports engineering upside down with an aggressive high-pitched V8 exhaust tone nobody had ever heard before.
