Heavy metal in Japan did not happen overnight. From the dark, heavy sounds of the early 1970s to the explosive rise of metal in the 1980s, Japanese bands built a powerful and unique scene that still influences metal today.
In this video, we explore the history of Japanese heavy metal from the 1970s through the 1980s, using one key album from each major band to explain how the sound evolved. From slow and heavy early metal, to melodic hard rock, traditional heavy metal, theatrical shock metal, and the beginnings of Visual Kei, this video breaks it all down in simple terms.
Each album is discussed in chronological order, focusing on its overall sound and why it mattered at the time.

Flower Travellin’ Band – Satori (1971)
