Heavy metal in Japan did not happen overnight. From the dark, heavy sounds of the early 1970s to the explosive rise of metal in the 1980s, Japanese bands built a powerful and unique scene that still influences metal today.
In this video, we explore the history of Japanese heavy metal from the 1970s through the 1980s, using one key album from each major band to explain how the sound evolved.
