Crayons have helped kids create colorful drawings for over 100 years! Long ago, people made crayons using natural wax and pigments, but they didn’t last very long. In 1903, the company Crayola created the first safe, affordable crayons for children, starting with just eight colors. Crayons became popular in schools because they were easy to use and didn’t make a mess. Over time, new colors like cerulean, tumbleweed, and macaroni and cheese were added. Today, millions of crayons are made each day!
