Techmoan | The HD-VMD Conclusion - Uncovering the real stats behind this failed format @Techmoan | Uploaded 2 years ago | Updated 1 day ago
The conclusion to my HD-VMD story which started with this video youtu.be/07Z4iL8hy1A
I've recently received a commercially released movie on a real VMD. This means I can now comment on the video quality as well as well as do some more detailed investigations to discover things such as the true video bitrate and the maximum capacity of a disc.
FAQs
Q) Did you try playing the VMD files in VLC?
A) VLC WILL NOT PLAY THE FILES FROM THE VMD - THE VMD FILES MAKE VLC HANG.
This is an identical result to that shown in part one youtu.be/07Z4iL8hy1A

Since making the video I’ve examined the VMD files in a piece of software called MediaInfo and here are the results.

Lucky Number Slevin
MPEG2 13.4 Mb/s Variable Bit Rate
1920x1080 Interlaced 16:9 25fps

So that’s the same as the bitrate I calculated manually.

By comparison - the sharper looking Lazy Town disc give these results
MPEG2 21.5 Mb/s Constant Bit Rate
1920x1080 Interlaced 16:9 25fps

So what extra things does this tell us that I didn't already cover in the video?
Well if MediaInfo is reporting this correctly the movie codec is MPEG2 not VC-1 and also the resolution is 1080i.

Regularly asked question
Q) Why are there comments from days ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons patreon.com/techmoan usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.
