Know the risks and signs of electric shock drowning (ESD). In this episode of Learn Something New™ by NFPA Journal®, you will learn what ESD is, how you can detect the risk, and some of the ways to prevent it. Electric shock drowning carries an especially dangerous risk in marinas or near boat docks. Electrocution in water occurs when faulty wiring on a boat or a dock causes an electrical current to pass through the water. ESD can also occur in swimming pools where faulty lighting is found.

NFPA 70®, National Electrical Code® (NEC®), includes requirements for electrical wiring and equipment on docks, as well as signage warning swimmers of the potential hazards.
