My review of #12 in the classic Hardy Boys canon, FOOTPRINTS UNDER THE WINDOW.
The original text has perhaps the most pulp fiction flavor of the series and deals with a gang of Chinese and American villains smuggling illegal immigrants into the US around Bayport’s waterfront and Chinatown districts. This means for a 1933 book there is definite cultural stereotyping involved as in any similar pulp story of the time. It’s certainly not the worst I’ve encountered but it is one of the two books in the series where this was of definite concern and a focus of the revision process to remove. The revised text adds a new side plot yet maintains the plot and some of the structure of the original text.
