In this video, I take on what I thought was the hardest piece of stone I’ve ever flintknapped. Coastal Plains chert from Alabama—raw, unpredictable, and honestly the kind of material that can humble you fast. I went into it expecting a fight the whole way through… but it actually worked better than I expected.
Midway through the reduction, the stone starts to open up, and by the end it finally snaps in a way that shows just how much structure was hidden inside it. I also break down a clear comparison between the raw material and a heat-treated section so you can really see how much heat treatment changes the way this rock behaves.
More than anything, this rock represents where I started. It’s the same type of material I grew up learning on, and it’s a big reason my knapping skills are where they are today. Tough stone like this forces you to learn control, patience, and reading the rock instead of forcing it.
