Michael Levy | The 'Guitar' of Ancient Greece! @MichaelLevyMusic | Uploaded July 2021 | Updated October 2024, 1 week ago.
The word 'guitar' is actually derived from the ancient Greek 'kithara'!
The kithara was the highly advanced, large wooden lyre favoured by only the true professional musicians of ancient Greece. The kithara reached its pinnacle of perfection during the “Golden Age” of Classical Antiquity, circa 5th century BCE.
The kithara was played to accompany dance, epic recitations, rhapsodies, odes, and lyric songs. It was also played solo at the receptions, banquets,
national games, and competitions of virtuosic skill!
Like the guitar, whose name from the kithara was derived, the kithara was perfect for accompanying song. Like the guitar, consonant harmonies could also be strummed on the kithara, by blocking specific strings with the left hand & strumming the open strings with the right hand!
As on the guitar, strings on the kithara can also be 'bent' to produce vibrato!
