This bridge has been built for just over 10 years. When it was first opened the gangs attacked it even before the opening ceremony. They smashed the lights, the flagstones that faced the water feature and graffitied the walls that retain the water of the pool. At the time Mile End had the 4th highest crime rate in London with most of the criminals coming off the Ocean and Limehouse Fields estates.
The reason why the establishment decided to take this area off the Marathon route is because they cannot ensure the safety of the event. Essentially this whole area is overpopulated (Ghetto) by ethnic minorities of whom the Muslims make up by far the largest community. A 26 mile route through this community would be a nightmare to secure and so they decided to move the event to West London and restrict it to a four lap curcuit thus making the whole route less than 7 miles per lap.
People have asked; As the London Marathon passes through the Borough what's the problem? Well when the London Marathon is being run there is no Olympics going on at the same time. Also the Olympics are a global event watched by most of the worlds population whereas the London Marathon is of minority interest globally. It is that very Global interest that will attract terrorism.
At the same time as the security of this event is paramount Cameron and his Eaton bedfellows are reducing policing.
