More than 4,500 years after it was carved, the Sphinx of Giza remains one of the most iconic and mysterious monuments in the world. Standing on the edge of Cairo, this man-headed lion appears to guard the temples and pyramids built for the great kings of ancient Egypt.
Seventy-three meters long and 20 meters high, the Sphinx was not built from stone blocks but carved directly into the limestone bedrock of the desert. Its head is larger than the Statue of Liberty, while its massive body is as large as a jumbo jet. Beneath the sand, scientists have also uncovered evidence that the monument once overlooked a vast artificial lake.
Yet many questions remain. Strange half-carved shelves around the site suggest the Sphinx may never have been fully completed. Which pharaoh was it built for, and what was its link to the sun?
