November 2019, Venice was swallowed up by the sea.
In the night between the 12th and 13th November 2019 80% of the old town of Venice drowned. Hundreds of businesses were destroyed and the ancient crypt of St. Mark’s Cathedral was flooded. It was the worst flooding since the great flood of 1966, which set in motion a worldwide effort to save the city from the dual threats of subsidence and rising sea levels. But the plan has failed. Despite investments worth 6 million euros into the MOSE surge barrier, the high lunar tide, heavy rain and the easterly winds drove the sea right into Venice’s streets. Starting “The Day after”, we assess what led to the disaster that may have killed Venice once and for all. We reconstruct the tragedy with hundreds of photographs and videos shot during the high tide, and we look into the past, more than fifty years ago, when it all started.
