"Reverse Offering" and "The Gold Standard" Just about every church takes up an offering . . . . . however, the Madison Avenue Church of the Brethren in York, PA distributes a "Reverse Offering" once each year. Everyone in attendance is given an envelope and inside is a $20 bill which is to be given to someone in need.
Several weeks later, during the worship service, the people of the congregation share their stories about giving the money away to someone who really needs it. The sharing of the reverse offering can be very creative, depending on the needs in the community.
A second video segment of this edition of "Brethren Voices" features the "Gold Standard" and the 100 Strong Program of Aurora, Oregon. In 1856, before Oregon was a state, about 600 immigrants settled in the Willamette Valley prospering for 30 years. They lived by the Gold Standard, "Love God above everything and love your neighbor as yourself."
