The 2012 London Olympics did wonders for handball in the UK. Every layer required to boost the sport, from grassroots participation through to dedicated administrators, swelled after the games and has continued to do so.
For those not in the know, handball is kind of a cross between basketball and football. It's also Europe's second most popular team sport.
A crucial layer in the eco-system of handball is youth participation, and in the UK the sport is thankfully growing in popularity amongst school age teenagers. According to England Handball CEO, David Meli, "...teachers find the sport easy to deliver, inclusive in nature and an excellent grounding for developing coordination and technical skills."
UK school handball initiatives, following the 2012 Olympics have helped nurture talented young people who are now benefiting from being exposed to high quality competition early.
Organisations like the London Youth Games deliver this high quality competitive experience, and last month we were invited to their Under 13s and Under 15s Handball Spring Finals. Some of these young British athletes might just have 2020 Tokyo Olympic potential!
Thanks to Stacey Andrews of England Handball, and thanks to Helen Killingley and Anna Young of the London Youth Games.
Filmed at the Score Centre in Leyton by Ify Osi.
