Today, we will explore the origins of the Boeing 737 airliner series, a design that began as a short-haul competitor in the 1960s. Drawing inspiration from the 707 and contending with rivals like the DC-9, the 737 evolved through several iterations. Boeing had sold almost 2,000 units before the introduction of the rival Airbus A320. The 1990s saw the development of a new generation of the type, which offered larger wings, advanced cockpits, and transcontinental range, resulting in the production of over 7,000 aircraft. We look at the milestones, early challenges, achievements, and the evolution toward the modern 737 MAX.
