Star Dust

Relatives of the crew and passengers on a British airliner that crashed into an Argentinian glacier 55 years ago were informed that their DNA samples matched human remains discovered from a crash site 15,000 feet up in the Andes. For decades, the mystery of the British South American Airways flight that disappeared in a snowstorm on August 2, 1947, its route from Buenos Aires to Chile, was shrouded in rumors of fugitive Nazi spies and stolen gold. There was no evidence of the lost Lancastrian aircraft, Star Dust. Then, almost a quarter of a century ago, while ascending Mount Tupungato, six Argentinians discovered a Rolls Royce engine, fuselage bits, and bleached clothing. Their finding sparked renewed interest in solving the mystery of what happened to Flight CS59 and its 11 passengers and crew. An expedition to search the mountain was organized, with the assistance of the local Argentine military.

In January 2000, they discovered the location and began collecting trash. Three human torsos, a foot in an ankle boot, and a hand with fingers extending were among the horrific remnants spread throughout the glacier's radius of more than a mile. They were in a remarkable condition of preservation; despite being freeze-dried by freezing winds, the remains had not succumbed to bacterial deterioration. In Britain, the news prompted a search for surviving relatives. The victims' names were known. They included passengers from Palestine, Switzerland, Germany, and the United Kingdom, as well as a diplomatic courier and crew. It took two years to locate relatives and conduct the requisite DNA tests. Following initial fruitless attempts, Argentine experts discovered close family ties. Five out of the eight British victims have been identified.

The Lost Flight That Reappeared With Skeletons

On September 4, 1954, Santiago Airlines Flight 513 flew from Aachen, West Germany, to Porto Alegre, Brazil. The flight should have taken approximately 18 hours. Instead, it took 35 years. On October 12, 1989, without contacting air traffic controllers, Santiago Flight 513 was sighted circling Porto Alegre airport before landing successfully. When authorities opened the doors, they discovered something much more shocking: the skeletons of 92 people buckled into their chairs.

Captain Miguel Victor Cury's skeletal body was discovered in the pilot's seat, hands on the controls, with the engine still humming. Experts couldn't discover any trustworthy news stories regarding Santiago Flight 513, which went missing in 1954. They also couldn't discover any stories of this flight landing 35 years later, in 1989, or of a plane landing full of skeletons. The rationale is straightforward. The story of Santiago Flight 513 is a work of fiction written by a notorious tabloid.
