On July 20, 1976, NASA's Viking 1 made history by becoming the first spacecraft to successfully land on Mars.
After a 10-month journey through space, Viking 1 descended through the thin Martian atmosphere and touched down safely in Chryse Planitia. Just minutes later, it transmitted the first photograph ever taken from the surface of Mars, giving humanity its first true look at the Red Planet from the ground.
Because radio signals from Mars took about 19 minutes to reach Earth, engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory could only wait in silence, hoping the landing had succeeded.
Viking 1 would continue operating for more than six years, studying Mars' atmosphere, weather, soil, and searching for signs that the planet might once have supported life. Its success paved the way for every Mars lander and rover that followed.
