On July 21, 1983, scientists at Vostok Station in Antarctica recorded the coldest air temperature ever officially measured on Earth: −89.2°C (−128.6°F).
Located deep within the Antarctic interior, Vostok Station experiences some of the harshest weather on the planet. On this historic day, the combination of high elevation, dry air, and the long polar night created conditions colder than anywhere else ever recorded by a ground-based weather station.
