Coconuts TV | The Fight Against Singapore's Death Penalty | Coconuts TV @CoconutsTV | Uploaded 1 year ago | Updated 17 hours ago
"What society is discarding as what we think are criminals, to their families, these are full people with full lives. I think we need to really go back to the drawing board and think about what harm and what suffering we are trying to address."
The controversy over Singapore’s use of capital punishment erupted earlier this year when the government resumed executions after pausing them during the pandemic.
Death penalty opponents, who have long been vocal about the injustices of the country's capital punishment regime, are increasingly being heard by their fellow Singaporeans. Their voices have also been joined by a chorus of condemnation coming from international organizations such as Amnesty International and the United Nations, which have called for a moratorium on the executions.
The Singaporean government has responded to these criticisms by adamantly defending its use of the death penalty as an essential deterrent against the threat of drugs flooding the city-state.
Watch our documentary to find out how the death penalty is carried out in Singapore.
