THE FICTIONAL SELF-HELP BOOK TAG
made with @marlicias_meanderings

This is a new original #tag from Alan at @AlansReads ‪and I heard about it from Gavin @GenreBooks23 ‪

"The self-help or self-improvement market was estimated to be worth $45.7 billion in 2024. This includes self-help books of a variety of types. But what if there were no self-help books, only fiction? Who would you choose to help you on your self-improvement journey?

Pick a fictional character as an answer to each of the prompts below to help you, or as an alternative, pick a fictional character who is the last person you’d ask for help with that prompt!"

The Prompts:

1. Learning a foreign language - who would you choose to help you learn a new language or brush up on one you can already speak but not very well?
2. Life is uncertain at the moment; who would you choose to help you prepare for future eventualities, who will teach you the survival skills you’ll need?
3. Everyone should be able to cook at least one outstanding meal. Who would you choose to help you plan and prepare that meal?
4. Life is tough and unpredictable and you should be able to defend yourself. Who would you choose to teach you some basic self-defense?
5. Life can be chaotic at times. Who would you like to teach you mindfulness or relaxation?
6. Free choice. What else would you like to learn to do, and which fictional character is going to teach you how?
7. Let’s all learn together - tag some fellow booktubers to take part.

There are twelve books and the plan is to read them in the order of publication from 1968 through 2019.

All books are scheduled for either one or two months. Books over 500 pages are scheduled for two months.

There is a scheduled break-month (or two) between every few volumes. This will give people a rest from McCullough or give slow readers an opportunity to catch up.

The schedule is posted as a PDF download on BookLadyLinda's blog: lindajomartin.com

I have a StoryGraph Challenge for David McCullough, unrelated to this challenge, but which I am using to track which McCullough books I have read: app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/3eda3826-56a1-40dd-a467-fcfda00b87dd
