Is the fanny pack (aka the sling) the most misunderstood bag in fashion history?

Well, let's track back and talk about it.

5,000 years ago, a man named Ötzi was found mummified in the Italian Alps. Strapped to his waist? A calf leather belt pouch. Inside? Flint tools, a bone awl, and tinder fungus. The first look at a small pouch for essentials.

Fast forward to 1954. Sports Illustrated names it the ‘fanny pack’. Post-war ski culture adopts it. Swiss alpinists stuff theirs with snacks, maps, and "a sneaky little flask" for the slopes.

Then the 80s happen.

Tracksuits. Spandex. Sportswear as identity. The fanny pack isn't just functional anymore — it's a statement.

Then, almost overnight, it becomes the punchline.

Corporate logos. Tourist stereotypes. Suburban dad energy. And the final nail in the coffin? A Weird Al Yankovic song in 2006.

But here's what mainstream culture always gets wrong.

When it moves away from something, the niche communities that actually use it never leave.

Ravers kept it. Skateboarders kept it — and then did something interesting. They tilted it diagonal. Better leg movement. Easier access. And just like that, a new name was born:

The sling bag.

Streetwear found it next. Gorpcore made it technical. Then Supreme and Louis Vuitton dropped a camo collab and suddenly the bag your dad wore to Disney World was one of the most coveted items of the decade.

Today, every major bag brand has a sling in their lineup.

Because our lives changed. Smartphones ate our cameras, our wallets, our music players. We carry less — but we carry it everywhere.

The sling bag didn't make a comeback. It just waited for the world to catch up.

Fanny pack. Sling bag. Crossbody. Three names, one bag — which one do you use? 👇
