The Exclusive Brethren (recently re-branded as the Plymouth Brethren) is a sect of Protestantism that practices 'exclusion from evil', that is, isolation from the world, even going as far as avoiding eating with non-brethren.
Many who grow up in the sect are dissatisfied with this restrictive life and endeavor to leave, but family and doctrinal ties make leaving extremely difficult. There are often harsh punishments for those who do not tow the Brethren line...
