The European Cancer Imaging Initiative (ECII) - https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/cancer-imaging - reached its second anniversary and to take stock of progress made so far, stakeholders from research, innovation, healthcare, and the public sector discussed the role of Cancer Image Europe platform in the context of the European Health Data Space - https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/health-data - and the AI Strategy - https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/european-approach-artificial-intelligence.
The European Cancer Imaging Initiative is one of the flagships of the Europe's Beating Cancer Plan - EBCP - https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/priorities-2019-2024/promoting-our-european-way-life/european-health-union/cancer-plan-europe_en. A key objective of the Plan is to make the most of the potential of data and digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) to combat cancer. At the heart of this Initiative is the Cancer Image Europe Infrastructure under development by the EUCAIM project - https://cancerimage.eu/.
By 2026, the infrastructure will provide European clinicians, researchers, and innovators with safe and secure access to extensive cancer image datasets in full compliance with EU values and rules. The Initiative will unlock the potential for AI tools to detect cancer sooner and faster, and treat patients more accurately; for the benefit of cancer patients, clinicians and researchers.
