Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code popularised an alternative view of Mary Magdalene involving a bloodline from Jesus and her (represented by the symbol of the Holy Grail), in the process introducing the audience to esoteric and gnostic forms of Christianity and the hidden history of Western religion.
I am doing a two-part video series in which I delve into these themes and investigate whether there is any truth to them, or if they are simply the byproduct of modern speculation and elaborates hoaxes. In Part One I deal with the figure of Mary Magdalene who is so central to this narrative - the true nature of her relationship with Jesus, the esoteric mysteries communicated by that relationship, and the history of her cult in the Languedoc region of southern France.
