The English Civil War was caused by the distrust between Charles I and Parliament. This meant that when Charles I recalled Parliament, they issued a number of laws which increased the tensions, thus provoking the English Civil War. There were three Civil Wars in total, ultimately ending in 1651 when Oliver Cromwell took control of the country.
