On 1 September 1983, KAL 007 was shot down by the Soviets. The Soviets claimed that it was not a civilian airliner, yet it killed 269 passengers, in which 61 were Americans. This caused to deteriorate the Soviet-American relationships: Yuri Andropov blamed it on deliberate American provocation whilst Reagan called it 'an act of barbarity' that 'should never be forgotten'.
