When I was a kid, I loved dinosaurs and of all the paleo-media that I consumed, my absolute favorite was “Prehistoric Park”, a 2006 BBC docudrama series that followed a fictional team using time travel to rescue extinct animals from the past and house them in a modern wildlife park, blending documentary-style presentation with speculative science fiction. While rewatching the series for the billionth time, my dad said something to the effect of “you know there’s a Disney ride just like this, right?” I remember being so ungodly excited and when we eventually went down to Animal Kingdom, I got a chance to ride what I could only describe as the most horrifying experience of my entire life.
This is “Dinosaur”, a ride that was in fact not based on “Prehistoric Park” but rather the very bland and forgettable 2000 film of the same name. As a little five year old kid, this was one of the scariest rides I had ever been in at that point in my life. I still vividly remember to this day, seeing the Carnotaurus come out right at the ride vehicle and just breaking down crying and putting my hands over my face so I didn’t have to look at it. As a consolation prize, my dad bought me this weird rubber dinosaur toy that I still have to this day. Apparently these things go for a lot right now on Ebay so maybe I should consider selling it? Anyways, despite having returned to Disney multiple times since that moment, it wouldn’t be until around twelve years after that when I finally rode it one last time...
