We've analyzed the economics behind a lot of things here on One Minute Economics... so why not safe travel?
Frankly, understanding the economics of space travel will give you a unique glimpse into perhaps the #1 industry of the distant future... with distant future being the operate word, however.
During the days of the Cold War, space programs attracted tons of resources primarily due to the fact that such successes were vital from a propaganda perspective.
However, as time passed, countries became less willing to fund expensive departments like NASA... and speaking of NASA and the economics behind it, the government allocated as much as 4.41% of the Federal Budget in the direction of NASA back in 1966.
Nowadays, that's just not the case anymore and the private sector was encouraged to step in.
Fortunately, it has but that begs the question: what are the economics of Elon Musk's SpaceX, Blue Origin LLC of Jeff Bezos or Virgin Galactic?
As you're about to find out, goals such as colonizing/exploring Mars that are mentioned by entities such as SpaceX are for the time being not within reach for financial reasons.
However, as the economics of space exploration change and companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin or Virgin Galactic add various income sources to the mix (anything from space tourism to asteroid mining)... that can most definitely change :)
