If you've struggled with the traditional box stitch, you'll love this version that cuts the 8 row repeat down to 4. This is technically a "fan and v-stitch" shell that uses the same sequence as the box stitch minus the 4 added rows to create the 3D effect to the stitch. Learn this and the box stitch will be a piece of cake.

Foundation Row
Chain a multiple of 8 + 2
Row 1:
Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *sk 3 ch, shell in 4th ch, sk 3 ch , sc in 4th ch; rep from * to end, turn.
Row 2 (Half Shell):
Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in 1st st at base of ch, ch 2, *sk 4 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, sk 4 dc, v-stitch in next sc, ch 2; rep from * across, 2 dc in last st, turn.
Row 3 (Half Shell):
Ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in space between the 2 dc from previous row (treat as a V-stitch), sc in next sc, *add shell in next V-stitch, sc in next sc; rep from * across, 5 dc in space between the last 2 dc from previous row (treat as a V-stitch), turn.
Row 4 (Full Shell):
Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *ch 2, sk 4 dc, V-stitch in next sc, ch 2, sk 4 dc, sc in next dc; rep from * to end, turn.
Row 5 (Full Shell):
Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *add shell in next v-stitch, sc in next sc; rep from * to end, turn.
Repeat rows 2β5 until completion.
π§΅ Straighten the Edges (Optional Finishing Step)
Work across the scalloped edge using various stitch heights. Here is a suggested sequence:
Fasten on to 1st, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc, hdc, sc, sc, sl st, *sc, sc, hdc, dc, dc (in sc), dc, hdc, sc, sc, sl st; rep from * as needed, ending after dc (in sc) on final repeat.
π Tip: Use your project's starting chain count to guide how many stitches you place along the edge. You may need to omit some stitches to keep the edge from expanding.
