Reflecting on the darker aspects of the late 18th century, this talk explores 2024-2025 NEH Fellow G. Matthew Adkins' research at The New York Historical on the Scioto Land Company, the records of which are held at the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library.
The Scioto Company was a New York-based shell company of the Ohio Company that engaged in a grandiose public debt and land speculation scheme that ultimately defrauded about 500 French settlers to Ohio in the 1790s and harmed the early reputation of the United States. The story of the Scioto Company and machinations of its American, French, and British associates is an example of the complex and even dystopian character of the era—and a reminder, perhaps, that bad times come and go often in history.
Dr. G. Matthew Adkins is the 2024-2025 National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at The New York Historical.
