The Evil Superman trope had become somewhat popular with the success of the Injustice video games and other studios/IPs taking interest in the concept. Whether it be Amazon Prime's The Boys and Invincible TV shows, or horror-esque films like Brightburn, this convinced a subset of casual fans that a version of Superman that is more sadistic is the more interesting take. Zack Snyder's original plans for the DCEU revolved around a five-movie arc, starting with Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and a Justice League trilogy. In the planned story, Superman would've turned evil thanks to Darkseid gaining access to the Anti-Life Equation. Many characters like Batman, Cyborg, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman would've been killed off in this future timeline before The Flash travels back in time. That said, the success of the most recent film by James Gunn, set in his new DCU, proved that modern audiences can get attached to a more traditional Superman, who is now played by David Corenswet. The Superman mythos is taking priority, with Supergirl being the next theatrical release.
