Yesterday, I had the honor of speaking during Howard University’s worship service.
I touched on the tension many young people wrestle with today: “I’m not religious — I’m spiritual.” I understand that language. I once used it myself while questioning institutions and challenging systems that didn’t reflect the change that was preached.
But spirituality without formation can become undefined and unanchored. We must aim to distinguish between Jesus — His character, teachings, and demonstration of God’s nature — and social constructs created by humans. This is how we will truly follow Him.
How do you separate the person of Jesus from systems built around His name?
