On Halloween 1966, seven people gathered around a locked footlocker inside the National Archives. Before anyone looked inside, two of them turned around and walked out of the room.
What they found — or didn't find — is the reason the most examined murder of the twentieth century is still missing its single most important piece of physical evidence. No theft was reported. No investigation was opened. And when officials realized what had happened, one of them wrote in a government memo that looking any further might mean "borrowing trouble."
They stopped looking.
We go back to the autopsy table at Bethesda, follow the paper trail through every hand the evidence passed through, and lay out the four explanations for where it went — the boring one, the conspiratorial one, the medical one, and the one almost nobody talks about. Each of them explains something the others can't. At the end, we tell you which one we think is true, and exactly where we're guessing.
The gap in the record is still a gap. Millions of declassified pages later, not one document says what happened.
