Map 9 is basically the "boss map" of Bitter Dream, so I guess this is the boss theme? The thing is, Map 8 is the sort of bombastic climax, and I didn't really want to try and match that energy two maps in a row. I don't think I really write symphonic or "theatrical" sounding music so I took a different approach to the idea.
This midi is heavily inspired by electronic artists like Moderat. I went for a very deep, saturated synth sound and an incredibly downbeat pace with I think maybe an odd time signature (I actually don't know, I'm not that savvy on music theory). The different melodies and harmonies kind of "step over" each other, which I think creates this almost twisting feel. My objective was to elicit this feeling of cathartic inevitability, a moment of reflection, and a hectic last stand against the ultimate deluge; the deep below. Hopefully, when the all the dust settles, the music continues to draw a bold underline beneath the preceding action and final quiet moments of the map, and adventure.
