To shed a little background on the record, One More Night is a nine-movement work largely about grief, but specifically inspired by the tragic Iowa plane crash that took the lives of the young popular musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, and their pilot Roger Peterson (immortalized in song as “The Day the Music Died”). It is framed by two expansive outer movements, and in addition to a movement dedicated to Peterson, consists of three movements serving as vignettes related to aspects of the artist’s personal lives paired with three movements that are reflections on a selected popular song from the corresponding artist.

“The Day” is a re-imagination and expansion of “That’ll be the Day”, one of Buddy Holly’s most popular tunes. Within the overarching theme of bereavement for the record, for the re-imagining of this particular track, I had Buddy Holly’s wife Mariain mind; and in the macro, all of us dealing with the aftermath of sudden tragedies that happen to loved ones (and of course their circles). With the music and video, I wanted to show stoic acceptance of unfortunate reality and constructive ways of channeling intense emotion from objectively negative spaces; so a simultaneous free guitar solo and monologue by Brendon Randall-Myers and Sylver Wallace respectively depict working through a situation musically and in prose. This is coupled with a blistering sax solo by Caroline Davis amplified with movement work from Gwen Gussman. Desdemona, with the cascading figures in the strings help convey the “loop” of time and a sense of inevitability, and Rick Martinez on the drums simultaneously grounds the listener while also adding to the unhinged nature of the track.
