One of the worst airborne disasters in military history led directly to what was arguably the most advanced rifle of the Second World War. The FG42 was so scarce that only Germany's most elite paratroopers could get their hands on one, and fewer than 7,000 were ever made.
This video covers how the catastrophe at Crete in 1941 exposed a fatal flaw in German parachute doctrine. You'll learn why German paratroopers had to jump headfirst with arms outstretched and couldn't carry anything longer than a pistol, while their rifles and machine guns landed separately in containers that scattered across the battlefield or fell into enemy hands. Over 4,000 paratroopers were lost, and Germany never attempted a large-scale airborne operation again.
The video gets into what made the FG42 technically remarkable: it fired full auto from an open bolt to prevent cookoffs, then switched to closed bolt for accurate semi-auto fire. The straight-line stock put the recoil force directly into the shoulder instead of causing muzzle climb. The side-mounted magazine allowed the bolt to travel into the buttstock, packing a 20-inch barrel into a 37-inch rifle. Then there's Monte Cassino, Normandy, and Operation Stösser where frostbitten survivors surrendered on Christmas Eve. The M60 machine gun that defined Vietnam was essentially a hybrid of the FG42 and MG42. Surviving examples now sell for over $300,000.
