This WWI military history documentary covers one of the worst trench raids of the First World War and one of the strangest truces that followed. This history documentary shows how a well-prepared Canadian gas attack turned into such a one-sided disaster that the Germans stopped firing and came out to help recover the casualties.
The 4th Canadian Division wanted to prove itself. They planned the largest Canadian raid so far with 1,500 men against Hill 145, the highest point on Vimy Ridge. Over 2,000 gas cylinders were moved into position. The Germans knew everything. Two prisoners escaped and made it back with details of the plan. Tunnelers had listening posts close enough to hear. Battalion commanders pushed back. High command overruled them.
