If you’ve spent any time online since 2014 and have even a small amount of interest in mysterious disappearances or true crime, chances are good that you’ve seen the footage: an airport’s security camera shows a 20-something man in a bright yellow shirt suddenly sprint out of an unseen doorway, through an airport lobby, and out into the surrounding field, seemingly running for his life without any of the luggage he came in with. Maybe you heard about a bar brawl that injured the man, or an airport construction worker that came into the room and spooked him. And if you don’t speak German, these are very likely the main things you know about Lars Mittank’s case: he was at an airport, he saw a construction worker, and he ran away, never to be seen again. And while the case of Lars Mittank is incredibly bizarre and mysterious – and remains unsolved over twelve years later – there’s a lot about his case that doesn’t seem to make it into the English-speaking coverage.
