Christopher Nolan spent three years trying not to make this movie.
He hated sequels. He had built The Dark Knight to be his last word on Batman. Warner Brothers came back with ideas that horrified him: digitally resurrect Heath Ledger, hire Leo as the Riddler. Nolan said no, and no, and no again.
Then he found the way in. The unlikely thing that finally made him say yes was a 1982 Sylvester Stallone sequel about a fallen champion.
This is the story of how Bane was modeled on a real bare-knuckle British gypsy, how Hans Zimmer crowdsourced a chant from a hundred and eighty thousand strangers, and how Nolan closed his trilogy with the only thing he had left to say.
