Roland has officially released the *CR-78 drum machine as a software plugin* faithfully recreating one of the most iconic rhythm boxes of all time. Originally heard on legendary tracks like *In the Air Tonight* and *Heart of Glass* the CR-78 is now available as a modern *VST3, AU, and AAX plugin* with powerful new workflow features built in.
In this video, I take a first look at the *Roland CR-78 plugin* comparing it to the original hardware design and exploring how Roland blended vintage authenticity with modern convenience. The interface mirrors the original unit — down to the wood grain — while adding dedicated views for tone shaping, pattern sequencing, tempo sync, automation, and drag-and-drop pattern arrangement.
The plugin includes a full built-in sequencer, editable pattern banks, and deep instrument controls, making it easy to dial in classic rhythms or customize grooves for modern productions.
