National Museum of American History | The Courier Interview | History Film Forum @SmithsonianAmHistory | Uploaded March 2021 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
The History Film Forum is an online series from the Smithsonian that explores history on the screen and the evolution of film as public history.
Set against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the new film The Courier is a true-life spy thriller in which an unassuming British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) is recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history. At the behest of the UK’s MI-6 and a CIA operative (Rachel Brosnahan), he forms a dangerous covert partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation.
Christopher Wilson, Director of Experience Design at the National Museum of American History leads a conversation with director Dominic Cooke (“The Hollow Crown,” Follies), screenwriter Tom O’Connor (The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Fire with Fire), and Claire Jerry, political history curator at Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, exploring the true history behind this fascinating story.
Presented by Smithsonian Associates, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, Lionsgate, and Roadside Attractions. This History Film Forum program was presented through the generous support of Dan Manatt and Democracy Films.
