My review of John Fowles's marvelous book The Collector, a literary thriller which serves as a dual character study of a lonely, deranged man and the sinister lengths he'll go to for love, and the unfortunate young woman who becomes his prey, as well as something of a social commentary on class divide as well; possibly the strongest debut novel I've ever read.
