Solidarity was a trade union ran by Lech Walesa in Poland. It quickly gained 10 million supporters and it was responsible for many of the reforms within Poland. Nevertheless, it soon became a major problem for the Polish Communist Party and despite Soviet warnings, Wojciech Jaruzelski imposed martial law in 1981. Solidarity was forced to go into hiding until they re-emerged in 1989.
