Elizabeth I immediately created her religious settlement after coming to the throne. This aimed to placate both Catholics and Protestants by creating a middle group which wielded together the two religions. Even so, seeing as Elizabeth I favoured Protestantism, the religious settlement of 1559, was Protestant in nature. This meant that there was opposition in Parliament and in the general population, yet Elizabeth was able to avoid the religious warfare that was occurring within Europe.
