Want more clubhead speed — but tired of being told it's all rotation, ground force, and lower body? In this video, Todd Graves shares the speed secret he discovered, and it's the opposite of what most instruction teaches.
Most of your speed comes from the hands and arms releasing — not from rotation or the ground. (Todd's point: you can produce 75-80% of your max speed sitting in a chair.) The real mechanism is a braking sequence. As you turn into the ball, your lead hand decelerates — it "puts on the brakes" — and that's what lets the trail arm straighten and the club accelerate through impact, exactly like skipping a rock. So you don't try to rotate faster; you get into a position to release faster, keeping the lead arm internally rotated so you release the face back to the plane instead of rolling it. This is the feel Moe Norman described as his "hands backing up through impact" — they don't really, but it feels that way, and Moe was triggering on it.
What you'll learn:
- Why rotation and "ground force" are oversold as speed sources
- Where speed actually comes from — the hands, the arms, and the release
- The leverage angle: how a bent trail arm becomes your biggest speed producer
- The braking system: how the lead hand slowing down accelerates the club
- Why you should release faster, not rotate faster
- The Moe Norman feel that makes it click
If you've been swinging harder and getting nowhere, this is the change that actually adds speed.
