About the Central -- Mid-Levels Escalator & Walkway system in Hong Kong.
Based upon a steeply graded hillside it was decided that rather than build an underground mountain railway (for instance, using the rack and pinion system) a series of covered walkways which include escalators and moving footpaths should be installed
Built in the early 1990's the aim was to reduce traffic congestion. In this respect it failed to achieve the desired result however the system helped revitalise the area it passes through and create an attractive niche shopping / eating area that has a welcome relaxed ambience.
This film also shows examples of urban metros which use several different solutions for steeply graded lines - funicular and cog wheel (rack & pinion) urban metros in Lyon, France and the fully automated driverless rubber tyred automated urban metro in Lausanne Switzerland
